Young people from across the country have been encouraged to use opportunities available through government programmes to become entrepreneurs, create jobs and help shape South Africa’s economic future.

The message was delivered at the three-day National Youth Empowerment Summit hosted by the Department of Social Development at the Orion Hotel in Rustenburg.

Speaking at the summit, SASSA Chief Executive Officer Themba Matlou highlighted that, while the agency supports about nine million beneficiaries, its broader goal is to help young people transition from dependency to economic independence. He encouraged beneficiaries to use the skills, training and support they receive to build sustainable livelihoods and become contributors to the economy.

The summit also showcased inspiring stories from young beneficiaries. Sbongile Mpambane from Limpopo explained that skills development programmes had transformed her life, equipping her with the confidence and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in her community. She is now able to provide for herself and share these skills with her peers.

North West MEC for Social Development Basetsana Dantjie urged delegates not to allow their age to define their potential. She encouraged them to lead by example through discipline, integrity and commitment, reminding them that being the future of the country comes with responsibility.

Delegates left the summit inspired to turn opportunities into thriving businesses, stronger communities and a more inclusive economy.
