British singer Adele finds herself between a rock and a hard place with her hit single ‘Million Years Ago’, after Brazilian Judge Victor Torres at the Rio de Janeiro’s sixth commercial court, ordered its withdrawal globally, including on streaming platforms.
This emanates from plagiarism allegations lodged by Brazilian composer, Toninho Geraes, who claims that the song was copied from his samba track called ‘Mulheres’ (Women), which was recorded by singer Martinho da Vila back in 1995.
Geraes is reportedly suing for royalties to the tune of $160,000 and a songwriting credit on Adele’s 2015 track.
The ruling also states that both Adele’s labels, Sony and Universal must immediately halt the use, editing, reproducing or commercializing the song in physical or streaming sharing platforms until the matter is concluded.
Judge Torres further threatened a $8 000 fine if the labels are found to be non-compliant.
This legal battle comes after Adele’s final Caesars Place, Las Vegas, residency performance on 23 November 2024.
The 36-year-old also announced that she would be taking a long break from music.
“I have no plans for new music at all.
I’m not doing anything else, I’m actually deceiving myself about what I’m going to do.
I don’t have any other plans,” revealed the singer.
The Grammy and Oscar winner used the last show to thank fans for the love they’ve shown her since she began her career at just 17-years-old.
