The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched an investigation following a viral video showing JMPD officers assaulting a motorist.
What began as a routine traffic stop turned violent after the driver was verbally assaulted, manhandled inside the vehicle, grabbed by the throat, pulled from the vehicle, and thrown onto the tarmac.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said the department had noted the incident with serious concern.
“While the department has not yet received a formal complaint regarding this specific matter, an active investigation is officially underway through our Internal Affairs Unit using all available evidence currently at our disposal.
“To ensure a thorough and complete investigation, we strongly encourage the complainants to come forward and provide formal statements to investigators,” said Fihla.
Furthermore, Fihla said the JMPD unequivocally condemns any abuse of power, misconduct, corruption, or unprofessional behaviour that undermines public trust and damages the integrity of law enforcement.
He urged members of the public to lodge formal complaints or report any officer misconduct directly to the JMPD Internal Affairs Unit.
“The JMPD remains firmly committed to accountability, transparency, professionalism, and upholding the highest standards of service for all residents and visitors in the City of Johannesburg,” added Fihla.
