South African regional airline Airlink has defended a double flypast conducted over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium during an international rugby match, following public debate over aviation safety procedures.
The flypast took place on Saturday, 29 August, as spectators gathered at the stadium for the rugby fixture. The aerial display quickly attracted attention, with questions raised about the safety and planning involved in operating passenger aircraft over a major sporting event.
Airlink, which is backed by Qatar Airways, said the manoeuvres were conducted by highly experienced crews. According to the airline, each aircraft was operated by a team that included three senior captains.
The airline said the flypasts were subject to careful planning and rehearsal, emphasising the experience of the crews involved.
Airlink operates a fleet of about 70 Embraer passenger aircraft and is one of South Africa’s major regional airlines. Its backing by Qatar Airways has also strengthened its position within the country’s aviation sector.
The incident has renewed discussion around the procedures governing aircraft displays and flypasts at large public events, particularly where passenger aircraft are involved.
