The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe heatwave in the central and western half of the country. This includes Free State, North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo, Gauteng and that some areas recorded higher temperatures over the weekend. Heatwave conditions with persistently high temperatures are expected over the eastern parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State, Gauteng, central and northern interior of the eastern cape until Tuesday. North West MEC for Treasury Motlalepula Rosho has tabled a R53.700 billion for the 2024/25 financial year, R55.086 billion for the 2025/26 financial year and R57.348 billion for the 2026/27 financial year at the provincial legislature in Mahikeng. South Africa has once again approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the provisional measures the court ordered on 26 January 2024 to be strengthened. The North West Department of Health has refuted claims by the Health and Allied Workers Indaba Trade Union (HAITU) that it underspent on its 2022/23 budget by R200.6 million. According to HAITU, the province claimed its underspending was due to, “delays in submission of invoices by service providers and late delivery of medical equipment”. President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially removed Judge President of the Western Cape Division of the High Court John Hlophe and Retired Judge of the Gauteng High Court Division, as judges. This follows a parliamentary impeachment vote last month where the majority of members of parliament voted for the two judges to be removed. According to Ramaphosa spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, this was done in accordance with section 177 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Government said it is pleased with the release of the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). The figures, which were released by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke in Pretoria, show a slight growth of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023. “This growth is particularly encouraging as it surpasses pre-pandemic levels. This indicates a resilient economy showing signs of recovery, and bettering previous strength,” said Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni. The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial hit another hurdle again on Monday at the High Court in Pretoria, after accused 1 Muzi Sibiya dismissed his instructing Attorney, Sipho Ramosepele, forcing another postponement. The trial within-a-trial was postponed two weeks ago and was expected to hear closing arguments in the matter. Twelve people including a three-year-old child have lost lives on three separate accidents in the North West over the weekend. This is recorded as one of the deadliest weekends by the department since the festive period. “In an accident between a sedan and light delivery vehicle on the Lichtenburg to Biesiesvlei road, seven people died instantaneously when the two vehicles collided head on in the late afternoon on Friday, 01 March. The Department of Minerals and Energy has confirmed steep fuel prices which will be adjusted from Wednesday. This is the second consecutive fuel hike for this year and analysts have warned of more increases in the future. “Both grades of petrol will increase by R1,21 cents per litre, while the diesel price will be hiked by between R1,06 and R1,19 per litre. Illuminating Paraffin will increase by 85 cents at the retail level, and LP gas will increase by 41 cents per kilogram,” said the department spokesperson, Robert Maake.
