Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) will lay off 3 700 employees across its platinum mining business across the country. According to the company, this was necessitated by a profit decrease of 71% due mainly to a 35% decrease in the platinum group metals (pgm) dollar basket price during the 2023 financial year. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has called for intervention in the financially troubled City of Tshwane as it struggles to deliver services vast parts of the metro. Lesufi made the call at the back of news that the National Treasury has taken back R 2.3 billion from the municipality after it failed to spend the funds. Several brands of peanut butter have been recalled because of possible health risks, according to SA’s top consumer protection agency. In a statement, the National Consumer Commission said it was conducting a nationwide assessment of South African peanut butters to see if they were contaminated with aflatoxin, a toxic substance that can cause serious health complications. “The commission urges the manufacturers, distributors and suppliers of peanut butter to comply with regulations and conduct urgent tests to assess the safety of the products on their shelves and take immediate corrective steps if found to be unsafe,” said acting National Consumer Commissioner…

The men’s marathon world record holder, Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum, 24, has died in a road accident in his home country. He was killed alongside his coach, Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana, in a car on a road in western Kenya on Sunday. Kiptum made a breakthrough in 2023 as a rival to compatriot Eliud Kipchoge – one of the greatest marathon runners. Kiptum bettered Kipchoge’s record, clocking the 26.2 miles (42km) in two hours and 35 seconds in Chicago last October.
