The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that two more members have died on their mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC. According to the SANDF, the two died in an apparent murder and suicide incident. “The Defence Force (SANDF) regrets to announce that two of its members currently deployed as part of United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) have died. Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said there has been significant progress to reduce load shedding to 600 hours during the December and January 2023/24 period, when compared to December and January 2022/23. The Minister said this has been possible by government’s interventions at Eskom and deploying qualified and experienced people to inconsistent power stations. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the Treasury has no choice but to borrow into foreign exchange accounts to reduce the high debt service costs. This will see the introduction of a new reform of the Gold and Foreign Exchange Contingency Reserve Account (GFECRA).
