Margaret Arnolds has been appointed the new speaker of the council of the City of Joburg. Arnolds from the African Independent Congress was elected unopposed during a special extra-ordinary council session which was boycotted by the Democratic Alliance, DA. She replaces former speaker, Colleen Makhubele, who was fired last week by her party Congress of the People, after she aligned herself with South African Rainbow Alliance, without the party’s approval. The National Assembly has placed nine officials on precautionary suspension with full pay over alleged security breaches that led to the fire that gutted some parts of Parliament last January. The Independent Electoral Commission, IEC, said it is pleased with the turnout of the first day of voter registration weekend. The IEC said this is testament that there is a huge interest in voter registration. “We confirm that in the initial hours of this morning, 90% of the voting stations were already opened, with the residual opening and confirming operation by 08:30. Two of the three Phala Phala suspects have been handed bail by the Bela Bela Magistrates Court in Limpopo. Froliana Joseph was handed bail of R5 000, while her brother, David, was handed bail of R10 000. The matter of the third suspect, Imanuwela David, was however postponed to 6 December. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed South Africa’s Sheryl Botes as the new coach for the Senior Women’s football team, the Crested Cranes. SuperSport United has confirmed that their former player and Zimbabwe goalkeeper George Chigova has passed away. The 32-year-old was diagnosed with heart problems in July, and has not played for the club since.
