The Intelligence structures of both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Lesotho police are investigating the existence of illegal military camps in South Africa. These follows claims by the Lesotho Police Chief, Commissioner Borotho Matsoso this week, that a group known as Malata Naha (which means land reclaimers in Sesotho) is recruiting and giving military training to Basotho youths on South African farms, raising fears of rebellion and threats to peace in the kingdom. The coach of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Molefi Ntseki said he’s optimistic that the team assembled to represent the country at this year’s tournament is the best and will make the country proud. The state in the case of five men accused with the murder of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, has today wrapped its case after three years of leading evidence at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. The trial, which began in 2022, has faced several delays, postponements, a trial-within-a-trial, death, and criticism regarding its cost to the state. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has expanded its probe into the North West Development Corporation (NWDC) to include contracts awarded to Tokiso Security Services CC. The company provided security services to the NWDC and other provincial government entities. President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, with immediate effect. Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers have been arrested on charges of extortion and corruption, following a swift investigation initiated by a public complaint. According to the JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, they received a distress call from a concerned citizen on Saturday, who reported being extorted by officers to avoid arrest. The South African Police Service (SAPS) said an overwhelming 1 049 998 aspirants applied for its 2025/26 Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP). This as applications for the 550 000 training programme positions were sent before the midnight deadline on 18 July 2025.
