The return of the first batch of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members from Tanzania, has been delayed until late Friday night or Saturday morning, at the latest. The devastating floods in the Eastern Cape have claimed 49 lives, with scores others missing. This was revealed by Premier Oscar Mabuyane during a media briefing in Mthatha. The torrential rains over the recent days have caused devastating landslides and flooding, leaving hundreds of families displaced as well as significant damage to critical infrastructure. The O.R. The Department of Health has sought to assure the nation not to panic, following the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, known as Nimbus or NB.1.8.1. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) the variant has been recorded in more than 20 countries, including India, Thailand, Indonesia and China. The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) said five people have lost their lives since the weekend in three separate fire incidents. The EMS said the incidents happened in Mayfair, Mapetla and Braamfischer, as the residents were trying to keep warm during the extreme cold conditions. The deceased, including two children between the ages of six and eight, died from smoke inhalation, others were found dead after a fire ravaged their house.
