Nine members of parliament have been fined by the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests for failing to declare their financial and registrable interests. The members failed to make the declaration before 14 October 2024, and the committee has since imposed fines on them ranging from R10 000 to R12 500. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has sent a stern warning to its officials involved in fraudulent activities, that action will be taken against them. This follows the arrest of three officials at its Johannesburg Local Office for suspected fraudulent activities on Friday. “Two males and one female were apprehended by the South African Police Service (SAPS) as the office was about to start with its operation following a tip off. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the withdrawal of Southern African Development Community (SADC) troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is not a sign of defeat, but rather a chance to make peace. The decision to withdraw follows a virtual meeting with heads of state which was held on Thursday. It also comes three months after 14 South African National Defence Force members were killed in the east of the country, during clashes with M23 rebels. Government says it’ll ensure that self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife, Mary, are extradited to the country, back from Malawi. This after the Malawi Magistrate Court yesterday ruled that the pair be extradited to South Africa, to face multiple charges, stemming from their 2020 court appearances. Bushiri is the leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church, which had its headquarters in Pretoria. The couple was granted bail pending trial but failed to comply with their bail conditions and fled the country under unknown circumstances, before they were located in Malawi. The Gauteng Health department has appealed to residents to take care of their eye health seriously, to avoid glaucoma which might lead to blindness. The department’s appeal comes as it marks World Glaucoma Day today, which is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” develops gradually without obvious symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), glaucoma is a major global public health concern, particularly in Africa, where access to early detection and treatment is limited. President Cyril Ramaphosa has again condemned lobby groups AfriForum and Solidarity, for what he described as a campaign to “spread misinformation” about the country to the US administration. His comments come after a recent visit by the two groups to Washington, where they met with representatives of the US administration. The Gauteng Department of Health has sought to assure the country that it’ll implement recommendations by both the Office of the Health Ombud (OHO) and the Office of Health Standards Compliance (OHSC) regarding allegations made in relation to Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. This after a damning report by both the OHO and OHSC revealed a poor state of the hospital, including broken infrastructure, a dysfunctional Human Resources department, poor staff morale, and inadequate security amongst others. Seven church members have died in a bus accident on the N2 between Mandeni and Stanger, in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday According to the statement released by MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the bus was travelling from Richards Bay to Shakaskraal. “The bus had a tyre burst resulting in the driver losing control. The bus rolled down and landed on the embankment. Sadly, at this stage we have seven fatalities, which include males and females.
