As part of combating illegal mining and other crimes, police in Klerksdorp, North West, have arrested a 21-year-old-Zimbabwean who was found in possession of explosives, suspected to be used in illegal mining activities and cash-in-transit. The Azanian People’s Organization (AZAPO) said it is devastated by the untimely death of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) militant and intellectual, Dr Gomolemo Mokae. This after Mokae’s lifeless body was found by neighbours at his home in Ga Rankuwa Zone 1 north of Pretoria on Wednesday evening. The 61-year-old Mokae was a renowned medical doctor, author, and political commentator. Mop-up operations are underway at the City of Johannesburg, following overnight disruptive rainfall which affected mostly infrastructure, trapped motorists, and collapsed walls in some areas. This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, eastern parts of North West, Mpumalanga and some parts of Limpopo. The case against four police officers accused of helping alleged illegal mining kingpin James ‘Tiger’ Tshoaeli escape from police custody, has been postponed to 29th May 2025 by the Stilfontein Magistrate Court in the North West. The accused, Jack Motlhabya (37), Menzi Shabalala (38), Ntuthuko Dladla (40) and Samkelo Mbotho (38), are facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and aiding and abetting a detainee to escape. Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief at the petrol pumps, after the department of Mineral and Petroleum announced a fuel decrease from the 5th of March. This is the first decrease in five months, following four increases by the department since last year. “Both grades of petrol will decrease by 7 cents a litre. Diesel will decrease by 17.5 and 23.5 cents a litre. Paraffin will decrease by 8c per litre at the retail level, and LP gas will decrease by 2 cents per kilogram,” said the department spokesperson Robert Maake.
