North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, has sent a message of condolences to the families of four people who lost their lives following a head-on collision on the N18 outside Mahikeng yesterday. According to the department, the accident happened about three kilometres northwards of the Kalgold mine, and all the deceased were from one vehicle that was traveling towards Mahikeng. The North West Department of Education is confident that the Last Push Campaign will assist grade 12 learners to prepare for their final exams. This as the department, led by MEC Viola Motsumi, successfully launched the campaign at MM Sebitloane Special School in Taung, with only 23 days before the year-end exams. More than 300 learners, education stakeholders, faith-based organizations and the local chief, attended the launch. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the repatriation of the remains of 49 freedom fighters who lost their lives in Zambia and Zimbabwe during the apartheid era, is to restore them to their families, people and reinstate their citizenship. Ramaphosa was speaking during the official repatriation and restitution homecoming ceremony for the remains of the freedom fighters, which was held at the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum in Tshwane on Friday. North West MEC for Health Sello Lehari, has condemned the kidnapping of a nurse at the Jouberton Community Health Centre in Klerksdorp, at the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. According to the department, the male nurse was abducted by an unknown suspect(s), who allegedly pounced on him at the entrance of the facility and drove with him to an unknown location in the area, extorting money from him before releasing him unharmed. The suspect was later traced and retrieved by police upon being released by these men, and a psycho-social support team has been dispatched to the facility to counsel workers. …
The Chairperson of the National Forensic Pathology Services Committee, Dr Thakadu Mamashela, said the cause of the death of most of the bodies that are unclaimed and unidentifiable at government mortuaries, were violence related. This after it emerged that there are 3 186 such bodies at government mortuaries across the country, with KwaZulu-Natal accounting for 1 257 cases, while Eastern Cape has 526 cases. A former South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member Leon Santos Conga has been sentenced to life after being found guilty of rape and attempted murder by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court. This for knowingly exposing and factually infecting his then girlfriend with HIV in 2016, for which he was given an additional 10-year direct imprisonment. Magistrate Fikiswa Ntlathi ordered the sentence should run concurrently. The Border Management Authority (BMA) officials have arrested a 39-year-old South African man at the Oshoek border gate, while he was attempting to cross to eSwatini with suspected stolen cash of R424 800. Officials said the money was found in a black plastic bag, and the suspect failed to explain how he got hold of the money. “The money was seized, and the suspect was charged with contravening the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) No. 38 of 2001, Section 54, which relates to the reporting of large cash transactions.
