The Presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa has accepted Deputy President David ‘DD’Mabuza’s resignation.
Mabuza also resigned as a Member of Parliament, paving the way for the president to appoint a new second-in-command.
This follows his request to Ramaphosa to step down from the position, which the president announced in his reply to the Sona debate in February.
Ramaphosa extended his gratitude and appreciation to Mabuza on behalf of the country for what he described as exceptional service to South Africa over the last five years.
This comes after Ramaphosa’s consultations with ANC alliance partners Cosatu and the SACP regarding his imminent cabinet reshuffle and Paul Mashatile is expected to be appointed deputy president of the country after Mabuza’s resignation.
DD declined his nomination from the floor at the ANC’s elective conference held in Nasrec in December 2022 for another term as the deputy president.
Mabuza is the first ANC deputy president to not become the party’s president.
