The City of Ekurhuleni Council has elected John Sinona of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) as its new Speaker during a council sitting on Thursday.

Sinona defeated Nkululeko Dunga of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), securing 94 votes compared to Dunga’s 32 votes.

A total of 210 ballots were printed for the vote. Of these, 126 were valid, 63 were unused, and 21 were spoiled.

The election comes as the council attempts to stabilise leadership in the metro following recent political changes within the municipality.

Former Speaker Dora Mlambo stepped down from the position after being appointed Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Infrastructure and Development. Her appointment formed part of Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza’s efforts to finalise his mayoral committee.

However, the metro’s executive was later shaken by the unexpected resignation of MMC for Finance Jongizizwe Dlabathi, leaving the key portfolio vacant.

Speaking after his election, Sinona thanked councillors for their support and pledged to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni.

“I want to thank the staff of the City of Ekurhuleni who work behind the scenes. Your support has helped prepare me for this role, and for that I am grateful,” he said.

Sinona also emphasised the importance of smaller parties in council.

“Every vote matters, regardless of the size of the party. Minority parties should also be heard,” he added.

The City of Ekurhuleni currently remains without an MMC for Finance following Dlabathi’s resignation last month.
