ActionSA has welcomed former prominent ANC councillor in Potchefstroom, David Kham, as part of its ongoing “Green Umbrella” expansion project, which continues to attract political parties and civic formations into its ranks.
Through this initiative, the party says it aims to build a united political alternative ahead of the fiercely contested upcoming local government elections.
ActionSA Deputy President Dr Mbahare Kekana welcomed new community members, local political leaders, and activists in Potchefstroom, North West.
“The welcoming of new members marks another important milestone in the party’s growth and demonstrates the increasing confidence that South Africans are placing in its vision to fix South Africa. ActionSA remains committed to building a strong, principled, and capable movement that delivers accountable governance and real change to communities that continue to seek a credible alternative to failed establishment parties,” Kekana said during an interview on YOU FM Newshour.
Kekana said the initiative has been successful since its launch last year.
“Since we launched the initiative in January last year, we have welcomed more than 13 small political parties that have officially merged with ActionSA. We have welcomed prominent leaders such as Mary Phadi in Mpumalanga, and now David Kham, who is well known and a hard worker in this area. He is one of the leaders who ensured stability of the now defunct Tlokwe Local Municipality, now JB Marks Local Municipality in Potchefstroom,” he said.
Kham rose to prominence after, together with several other independent candidates, successfully challenging the 2013 Tlokwe Local Municipality by-elections in the Constitutional Court. The landmark ruling declared the by-elections in seven wards invalid due to unlawful voter registrations, which rendered them unfair.
Kekana added that the party remains focused on building a strong, principled movement aimed at delivering accountable governance.
“I took a conscious decision to merge the party which I founded and led, Forum4ServiceDelivery, into ActionSA and agreed to demote myself to the position of Deputy President to demonstrate to our people that this thing of holding on to positions is over. Our people are struggling because we want to hang on to positions. All these leaders who are joining us under this Big Umbrella join us out of their own accord; they are not promised anything or any position,” Kekana said.
ActionSA’s Deputy President said the party is confident about the upcoming municipal elections expected in November.
“We don’t want a coalition. We are campaigning for an outright majority and to govern many municipalities like we are doing in the City of Tshwane. We aim to take over municipalities in the North West, Mpumalanga and across the country. We have no time to play; all we want is to render services to our people and develop them,” he said.
