After two decades of grappling with unsafe drinking water, residents of Hammanskraal in Tshwane are on the cusp of a significant breakthrough. The city is nearing the conclusion of tests to determine the safety of the water flowing from their taps, raising hopes for a future where clean drinking water is a reality.
In a proactive move, the City of Tshwane has constructed a portable wastewater treatment plant designed specifically to address the needs of this community. However, the commissioning of this facility has faced several challenges that have delayed its operation. Meanwhile, city authorities are taking interim measures to ensure that residents receive water that is chemically safe for consumption.
City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba confirmed that the city’s current strategy involves flushing the water supply network and continuously testing for compliance with the South African National Standards (SANS). Bokaba noted, “Based on the turbidity challenges experienced in the past few weeks in regard to the provision of clean drinking water to the community of Hammanskraal, Magalies Water and the City of Tshwane will continue to flush the system and monitor the water quality to clear the turbidity in the network.” He assured the community that formal notifications will be issued once the tap water is safe to consume.
For years, Hammanskraal residents have endured the plight of unsafe tap water, often relying on bottled water and alternative sources. The challenges have not only posed health risks but have also sparked frustration among the community who feel overlooked in a country abundant in natural resources.
As the tests progress, the anticipation within the community grows. Residents are cautiously optimistic that the stringent measures being implemented by local authorities will ultimately yield positive results. “We just want to know that when we turn on our taps, we can fill our cups without worry,” said one local community leader, echoing the sentiments of many in the township. “It has been too long.”
The City of Tshwane’s commitment to restore safety and confidence in its water system could well mark the beginning of a new era for Hammanskraal, shifting from the shadow of past neglect to the brightness of future assurance.
