The North West Department of Public Works and Roads has partnered with Valterra Platinum Mines in a landmark R100 million road upgrade project aimed at improving the 12km stretch between Ramokokastad and Brits.

The public-private partnership initiative is set to bring much-needed relief and improved infrastructure to communities within the Moses Kotane Local Municipality in Mogwase, outside Rustenburg.

The department’s MEC, Elizabeth Mokua, Senior General Manager at Valterra Platinum Mines’ Amandelbult Complex Johan Van Tonder, and Kgosi Manotshe Ramokoka of the Baphalane ba Ramokoka Traditional Council signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday.

Under the agreement, Valterra Platinum Mines has committed R98 million towards upgrading a 10km section of the road, while the department will contribute towards the remaining 2km, which includes the construction of a bridge to improve safety and ensure all-weather accessibility for communities.

A consulting engineering firm has already been appointed to complete the road designs before construction begins, while the mine will appoint the contractor responsible for carrying out the construction work.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mokua said the department continues to encourage partnerships with the mining sector as part of its strategy to expand, maintain and preserve the province’s road network.

“This is far more than a road construction project. It is a partnership that restores hope to the people of Ramokokastad, Bojating and all surrounding villages, while demonstrating that sustainable infrastructure development is possible when government and business work together.

“I also want to emphasise that mining remains a key driver of the provincial economy. At the same time, mining activities place considerable pressure on our road infrastructure through the movement of heavy vehicles,” said Mokua.

She added that such partnerships represent “a responsible and sustainable approach to ensuring that communities benefit from improved infrastructure while supporting economic growth”.

Meanwhile, Van Tonder reaffirmed the mine’s commitment to ensuring that road infrastructure in the area benefits employees, mining operations and surrounding communities by improving access to social amenities and supporting local development.

The project is expected to strengthen connectivity, enhance road safety and contribute to economic growth in the region.
