The ongoing torrential rains that have lashed several areas of the North West Province over the weekend have necessitated urgent state intervention, particularly in healthcare facilities. In a proactive move, Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi is set to visit three hospitals impacted by the floods tomorrow.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning due to the prediction of disruptive rainfall, which could lead to localised flooding and significant damage to vital infrastructure—including bridges and low-lying areas. These weather conditions have not only affected the North West but have also placed the neighbouring province of Limpopo on alert.
In an official statement, Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale has confirmed Motsoaledi’s visit, with particular focus on the General De La Rey Hospital located in Lichtenburg, Ditsobotla Municipality. “This hospital is apparently the most affected thus necessitating the presence of the Minister,” emphasized Mohale, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Concerns have intensified regarding the safety and wellbeing of patients at the hospital, with reports of some individuals already being transferred to alternative facilities due to the flood’s impact. “What is most worrisome to the Minister is the report that some of the patients have already been transferred to other hospitals,” he added.
During the visit, the Minister will be joined by the provincial MEC for Health, Sello Lehari, along with a technical team from the national head office. This team will include engineers tasked with assessing the extent of the damage and formulating an intervention plan to address the crisis effectively.
