The 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July once again proved to be far more than South Africa’s premier horse racing event, delivering a significant economic boost to Durban through tourism, hospitality and betting activity.
An estimated 40,000 racegoers descended on Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, with organisers forecasting the event would inject almost R800 million into the local economy. Hotels, restaurants, transport providers, tourism attractions and thousands of informal traders were expected to benefit from the influx of visitors.
The event also generated substantial employment, with 9,000 hospitality staff and 1,000 security personnel deployed across 29 hospitality venues catering for corporate guests, sponsors and racegoers.
Betting activity remained a major driver of the day’s commercial success. Tote operator TAB described the meeting as “Africa’s biggest betting spree”, forecasting a R15 million Pick 6 pool alongside a R10 million Quartet pool, multiple Jackpot and Bipot bets, and international wagering through the Hong Kong World Pool on the main race.
Hollywoodbets said continued investment in South African horse racing has focused on improving both the racecourse and spectator experience. Infrastructure upgrades at Greyville included new grandstands, enhancements to the parade ring, upgraded roofing, improved sound systems, large digital screens, backup generators and extensive refurbishment work.
The annual spectacle also showcased South Africa’s fashion industry, with this year’s “Country Allure” theme drawing leading designers, celebrities and influencers to Greyville. The event has become one of the country’s biggest lifestyle occasions, generating widespread media coverage and social media engagement beyond the racetrack.
On the track, favourites Sommerstern and Please Be True won the opening two races before Australia’s Zac Lloyd guided Magic Verse to victory in the third race, adding to the festive atmosphere ahead of the day’s headline R10 million Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Now in its 130th year, the Hollywoodbets Durban July continues to cement its status as one of South Africa’s largest sporting and business events, driving tourism, creating temporary employment and attracting millions of rand in betting turnover while showcasing Durban as a premier events destination.
