Meta has introduced several changes to Instagram as part of a broader brand refresh aimed at enhancing the user experience and giving the platform a more modern identity.
Among the most noticeable changes is a redesign of Instagram’s wordmark, which has remained largely unchanged for the past decade.
According to Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, the refreshed wordmark is intended to promote individual expression and give users greater freedom to showcase their personal voices.
“Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram,” Mosseri said in describing the new design.
The redesigned wordmark combines cursive and regular lettering in black against a nude-coloured background. It will be accompanied by an updated Instagram Sans typeface, a new handwriting font and a custom hand-drawn typeface called Instagram Pen.
Users divided over the redesign
The changes have sparked mixed reactions among Instagram users, with some welcoming the refreshed visual identity while others have called for the old design to be restored.
User @fouad_ballan welcomed the changes, commenting: “I love it. Very fresh.”
Another user, @domsbaba, also approved of the redesign, writing: “I approve too. Great call.”
Meanwhile, @drdinafanai praised Instagram’s decision to update its visual identity after a decade.
“Ten years is a long time for a digital identity to stay recognizable. Modernizing without losing familiarity is probably the hardest part of a redesign like this,” the user commented.
However, the redesign has also attracted criticism.
User @jornadatop questioned one of the changes, writing: “Change the R; it looks like a Z.”
Another user, @embertoyaussie, was more direct, commenting: “Change it back right now!”
As users continue to familiarise themselves with Instagram’s updated visual identity, Meta appears confident that the redesign will help position the platform for the future while retaining elements of the brand’s familiar aesthetic.
