It was business as usual in Rustenburg as about 400 supporters of the EFF marched to the local municipality as part of the national shutdown for President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down and for load shedding to end.
EFF Member of Parliament, Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi, who joined the Rustenburg protesters, said she was satisfied with the fact that some local businesses heeded the call to close their businesses.
Mkhaliphi said the EFF members will continue to protest until midnight.
“As you know today is a #NationalShutdown, it’s a demonstration, so we are picketing, we’re just demonstrating that nothing has to move today.
“So we moved from our regional offices to the municipality, just to identify a location, that way we can check in a way if there’s anything happening here. So we’re happy to report that our people and business people here in Rustenburg, have headed a call and there’s nothing that’s operating.
“We also told our people that the reason why we have embarked on this initial shutdown is because of the load shedding and we demand that Cyril Ramaphosa resign,” said Mkhaliphi.
Police maintained a strong presence and taxis and buses in the area have been operating without any hindrances, ferrying people to their different destinations.
Earlier on, the EFF’s Bojanala Regional Secretary Tebogo Hlongwane said once other members arrive, they will march to the local municipality and Eskom, but it seemed the Eskom March didn’t materialise.
