Orlando Pirates have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng, in a deal that remains subject to a medical and final personal terms.

The Soweto giants announced that the two clubs had already reached an agreement in principle prior to the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, but both parties agreed to delay the public confirmation of the move.

This decision was made to allow Mofokeng to focus on his duties with Bafana Bafana and to avoid unnecessary distractions during the tournament period.

Deal still pending final steps

According to Orlando Pirates, the transfer is not yet fully completed. Mofokeng still needs to:

  • Pass a medical examination
  • Agree to personal terms with the Belgian club

Only once these conditions are met will the move be officially finalised.

The club emphasised that no further comments will be made until all aspects of the transfer have been concluded.

Focus on player development and national duty

The agreement marks another significant European move for a rising South African talent, with Union Saint-Gilloise continuing their recruitment of emerging players from African leagues.

Pirates also highlighted that protecting the player’s focus during international duty was a key reason for the delayed announcement.
