The draft policy on women in sport has been approved by Cabinet for public discussion.
This was said by Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni on Thursday in Pretoria when explaining the decisions made at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
In accordance with the policy, a number of actions will be taken to assist and encourage women in sport and to ensure that initiatives are in place to address gender imbalances in sporting codes and structures.
The proposed policy recognizes that more women participating actively in sport and leadership positions, such as coaching and officiating, will significantly lessen and eventually remove gender disparity and other types of discrimination against women.
Also, it aims to advance equity and guarantee that women are treated with respect or recognition in the workplace, including receiving the same compensation as males, according to Ntshavheni. organizing the 2023 International Maternal and Newborn Health Conference.
The International Maternal and Newborn Health Conference will be held in Cape Town from May 8–11, 2023, according to authorisation from Cabinet.
The conference will see more than 1 000 stakeholders from around the world gather to accelerate solutions to improve maternal and newborn survival, and prevent stillbirths.
“South Africa has made great progress towards achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals targets for maternal and newborn health, and prevention of stillbirths. The country will also benefit immensely as conference delegates will share, among others, their effective strategies and innovations on maternal and newborn health issues,” Cabinet said. sanews.gov.za
