The South African Emergency Personnel Union (SAEPU) says it is deeply disturbed by violent attacks on ambulances that put both the lives of its personnel and patients in grave danger.
In a statement, the union says the recent incident happened in Thabakhubedi in Limpopo when emergency personnel were returning from transporting a patient to her home in the early hours when he was encountered by a group of intoxicated individuals next to a tavern.
The union adds that the personnel used the same route when he came to pick up the patient earlier and nothing happened but to his surprise, he was met with hostility and violence when returning the patient.
“In a shocking display of aggression, they began assaulting the ambulance, opening doors and attempting to jump inside. Fearing for his life, the personnel continued to exercise extreme caution and continued driving to ensure his safety,“ read the statement.
The union says it is appalled by the senseless acts of violence, saying it shudders to think of the devastating consequences had there been a patient on board.
“It is unconscionable that individuals who would presumably require medical assistance in times of need would so callously endanger the lives of those sworn to help them. This senseless act of violence not only puts the safety of emergency personnel at risk but also jeopardizes the well-being of genuine patients in need of urgent care.”
According to the statement, the personnel will have to think twice before responding to emergency calls in certain areas.
“The psychological impact of this incident should not be underestimated, and we worry that it may lead to a decline in morale and reluctance to respond to emergencies.”
The union condemned the attacks on its personnel and called on authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of emergency personnel.
