The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has called for a full investigation into a pre-match altercation between officials of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates during the highly anticipated Soweto Derby on Sunday.
In a statement, SAFPU stressed that any individuals found guilty of misconduct must be held accountable without fear or favour. The incident occurred during the warm-up period and disrupted player preparations ahead of the match, which eventually ended in a 1–1 draw.
Speaking on the matter, FarPost editor Mthokozisi Dube explained that tensions escalated when Pirates officials encroached on the section of the pitch designated for Chiefs’ warm-up. Chiefs officials responded by pushing back, leading to a confrontation that briefly halted preparations.
Dube noted that while the intense rivalry between the two clubs often brings heightened emotions, the incident reflected poorly on one of Africa’s most iconic football fixtures. The Soweto Derby attracts global attention, with international journalists in attendance, making such scenes damaging to its reputation.
Despite the disruption, the spectacle of the derby still impressed visiting fans, particularly the unique atmosphere of tens of thousands of supporters from rival teams sharing the same stadium—an experience rarely seen elsewhere.
Meanwhile, concerns were also raised about fan experience and stadium logistics. Nqobile Ndlovu highlighted ongoing issues with ticketing systems, congestion, and access control, which contributed to a 45-minute delay in kick-off. He criticised the lack of reliable infrastructure, noting that many supporters endured long waits due to system failures.
Ndlovu also called on the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa to improve rail transport options to ease access to the stadium on match days.
