Six people have lost their lives following a horrific head on collision on the R49 road between Zeerust and Kopfontein Port of Entry in the North West.
According to the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, the accident happened on Sunday night.
“Four of the deceased are from one vehicle.
Two of the three from another vehicle survived and were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
However, one of the survivors succumbed this morning, bringing the total number of the deceased to six.
This brings the number of road accident fatalities to just below 50 and the second major crash in the province since the joint law enforcement operations commenced for Easter holidays on the 20th of March 2025,” read a statement from the department.
The department said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Nietverdiend Police Station in the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.
The department MEC Wessels Morweng has send his message of condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes speedy recovery to the injured.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, has applauded the department road safety campaigns, for helping keep the number of accidents and fatalities low during this Easter period.
Creecy, who was releasing a preliminary report on the Easter operations, most provinces have recorded fewer accidents since the beginning of the Easter road safety campaign.
“Early indications are that our road safety campaign is holding strong, and the public has responded positively to our messages.
I don’t want to issue statistics at this stage.
I would prefer to issue them once the Easter weekend is concluded because I don’t want to jinx the very good record that we have had so far.”
But we can say that the fatalities and the crashes are showing a significant decrease in all provinces except for Mpumalanga,” said Creecy.
