South African activists who took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla (Global Sumud Flotilla) have returned home following their detention in Israel, as government authorities begin reviewing reports and assessing possible further steps.

The group arrived at O.R. Tambo International Airport after being released from custody, where they had been part of a wider international mission involving hundreds of participants from multiple countries.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has confirmed that it is compiling and reviewing debrief reports from the returning South Africans. Officials have also indicated that further diplomatic or legal action will depend on the findings of these assessments and consultations with the individuals involved.

Consular teams from South African missions in Turkey and Jordan were involved in tracking the activists’ movement after their release and coordinating their return journey. Authorities also engaged with Israeli counterparts regarding the welfare and treatment of detained citizens.

The activists’ return comes amid broader diplomatic tensions linked to South Africa’s ongoing International Court of Justice case against Israel, which has been referenced in discussions surrounding the incident.

Government officials have stated that they will continue to assess all available information before determining whether additional steps are required in relation to the detention and reported treatment of the activists
