A police task team has been set up to track, trace, and arrest culprits involved in recent mass shootings in the Eastern Cape.

Ten people were killed in two separate incidents on Wednesday night in the province.

According to the provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, in the first incident in the Thantseka Village in Bityi, unknown suspects shot and killed a 62-year-old woman, her daughter (44) and her 13-year-old grandson.

Another incident was reported in Qunu where gunmen stormed into a rondavel and opened fire killing seven people, four men, and three women instantly.

Kinana says the motive behind the senseless killings is still unknown and they are yet to establish whether the two events are linked or not.

This comes a few days after the killing of eight people on Sunday night at a birthday party in Kwazakhele in Gqebera.

Police preliminary investigations revealed that the owner of the house was celebrating his birthday when two unknown gunmen entered the yard and started shooting at the guests.

To date, 18 people lost their lives in four days in the province.

Police in KwaZulu Natal are also searching for suspects who killed four people in KwaMashu men’s hostel on Wednesday. It is understood that gunmen opened fire at victims before fleeing the scene.

Three people were declared dead at the crime scene while the fourth victim succumbed to injuries in hospital.
