The Gauteng Department of Health said health services are continuing as normal at some of its facilities in Tshwane, which experienced extensive damages due to Tuesday’s night storm. The department said no patient or staff members at these facilities were injured because of the damages caused by the storm. The unprotected strike by nearly 2 000 workers at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum mine near Rustenburg in the North West enters its third day today. According to Implats, which owns the mine, the wildcat strike began on Monday morning without the sanction of the operation’s representative union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). The mine management said as at 19h00 Tuesday, 167 employees had safely returned to surface and nearly 2 000 employees were still underground. The North West MEC of Community Safety Sello Lehari is confident that arrests would soon be made, following Saturday’s mass shooting at the Popo Molefe informal settlement in Boitekong outside Rustenburg. Eight people were killed on the scene, the ninth one was certified dead-on arrival at the hospital while scores, including children, were injured in the incident. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the ANC has noted former president Jacob Zuma’s announcement that he will not be voting nor campaigning for the party during next year’s elections. The North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management is targeting less fatalities during this year’s festive season. The province recorded 94 fatalities during the 2022/23 statistics, which was a 21% reduction when compared to 119 recorded during the 2021/22 period. The bail application of alleged murderer and insurance fraudster Agnes Setshwantsho has been postponed to 20 December 2023 by the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in Mahikeng, North West.
