The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) said it is deeply alarmed and saddened by the increasing number of killings and suicides among law enforcement officers. The union’s comments come after the recent tragic incident, whereby a police officer allegedly shot dead his crime prevention warden girlfriend Chesnay Keppler in Eldorado Park on Thursday. Motorists will have to dig deeper in their pockets at the pump stations. This as the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has announced the fuel increase from 1 January 2025. “Petrol 93-octane will increase by 19 cents a litre. 95-octane will increase by 12 cents a litre. Diesel prices will increase by 7.5 cents and 10.5 cents a litre, depending on the grade, while Illuminating paraffin will decrease by 13 cents a litre at the retail level. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, said the government will close all illegal initiation schools in the Eastern Cape, after 27 initiates died during the summer season. Hlabisa also expressed concern that 253 initiates have died in the Eastern Cape alone since 2019, adding that most of the deaths were preventable. South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has fined Capitec R56 million, for failing to comply with anti-money laundering regulations, as per the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. The bank said the fine follows inspections conducted on Capitec Bank in terms of section 45B of the FIC Act in 2021 and 2022. “The inspection in 2021 focused on the retail bank segment and the 2022 inspection focused on the business banking segment of Capitec Bank. Thirty-eight people have been killed and 29 survived, after an Azerbaijani airliner carrying 67 passengers, crashed near the Kazakhstani city of Aktau.According to the Azerbaijan Airlines, the plane was enroute Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to the Russian city of Grozny, when it was diverted and attempted an emergency landing three kilometres from Aktau. Despite a looming R5 million administrative fine by the Information Regulator of South Africa, the Department of Basic Education said it is going ahead with the publication of matric results in the media.
