Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has applauded Eskom for managing to sustain nine months without load shedding. The blackouts were last implemented in the country in March this year and is the longest period without load shedding in the last five years. Taxi commuters travelling home during this festive season, have been warned to take minimal luggage, or risk paying for it. The warning was issued by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), which said the initiative is to avoid overloading, which poses a significant threat to the safety of passengers.“Due to the risks associated with overloading, we may be forced to consider charging for excess luggage to ensure that our vehicles operate within safe capacity limits. The North West Community Safety and Transport Management department said 36 fatalities have been recorded in the province since the start of the festive season. According to the department, the fatalities were because of several accidents. “Drunk driving has been identified as one of the major contributors of fatal crashes.As of the beginning of the festive season the province has recorded 36 fatalities from 31 crashes. In a rare twist, the older brother of former France and Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, Mathias, has been sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for kidnapping and attempting to extort the footballer.
