North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi has condemned Friday’s mass shooting at a tavern in Kanana, near Klerksdorp, that left eight people dead. According to the police, five men entered the tavern on Friday evening and refused to be searched at the entrance and a scuffle ensued. “On entering the tavern, lights were switched off and random shots were fired, as some of the patrons scampered out. Seven people died at the scene, including five men and two women. The sixth man died at the hospital,” read a police statement. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has announced that the consumer price index (CPI) was 5.1% in June, down from 5.2% in May. According to the agency, the main contributors to the inflation rate were housing and utilities, miscellaneous goods and services, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and transport. “After stalling at 4.7% in April and May, the annual rate for food & non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) edged lower to 4.6% in June. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced betting company Betway, as the new sponsor of the league ahead of the 2024/25 season. The announcement follows concerns that the previous sponsor and broadcaster DStv, might not continue with its five-year sponsorship deal of the PSL. “We now have the Betway Premiership as the sponsor of the league. A joint effort by the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) led to the seizure of various assets and properties valued at approximately R52.6 million across some parts of the country.
