Collaborative efforts between the North West Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) , the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) and the police have led to the closure of 17 illegal initiation schools across the province. This follows an oversight visit conducted by the PICC since the start of the winter season. The South African National Defence Force, SANDF, has confirmed the deaths of two of its members at the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC. “The attack on 25 June 2025 resulted in two fatalities and twenty injured. Four members who were critically injured have been hospitalised, whilst the rest who suffered minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon,” said SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini. There are growing calls for the world football governing body, FIFA, to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup.
