American award-winning singer and songwriter, John Legend, has stood by his decision to forge ahead with headlining a sold-out concert in Kigali, Rwanda, despite the government’s alleged involvement in the war plaguing the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This after he faced backlash for performing as the lead act at the Global Citizens concert, Move Afrika.
Fans were upset by his decision, accusing him of pursuing the bag at all costs and endorsing the hostilities in the DRC.
During an interview the All of Me hitmaker sought to explain himself.
“I am aware of what’s happening and I’m aware of the calls there for me not to do this show, but I really believe that the mission of Move Africa is still important.
I don’t believe we should punish the people of Rwanda and the people of other countries if we disagree with their leaders,” said Legend.
Fans on social media moved on to praise Nigerian singer, Tems, for what they described as “activism” on her end, for cancelling her show in Kigali, amid the M23 rebels’ violent attacks.
However, Legend still believes that artists can use music to bring unity and advocate for peace.
Furthermore, there is growing concern about the deepening humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing conflict in DRC.
Calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic peace engagements continue.
