A husband, loving father, mentor, storyteller, cultural icon, and a gentleman.
These are some of the sentiments used to describe the late Don Mlangeni Nawa, who passed away on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Nawa family confirmed that the veteran actor died on Wednesday, but didn’t disclose the cause of his death.
They described him as the heart of the family, a loving father, brother and friend.
“To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced.
His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the love he gave so freely.
We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support,
We kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this immense loss,” read the statement.
In addition, the family said memorial and funeral details would be shared at the right time.
The 65-year-old multi-award winner transcended on some of the most iconic and recognisable roles on South African television
He was popularly known as Zebedee Matabane in the former SABC-3 soapie Isidingo.
He also featured in many productions including popular roles such as the distinct debt collector Laqhasha on Sgudi Snaysi, Uzalo, The Throne, Hlala Kwabafileyo, The Estate and Legacy amongst others.
In 2006, he was honoured with a Golden Horn Award for Best Actor in a TV Soap.
He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Royalty Soapie Awards in 2018.
Nawa has been praised by his colleagues and fans for his professionalism and humidity.
The news of his death was followed with outpouring of messages, including from government.
The Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie conveyed his condolences to the Nawa family.
“I grew up watching a true giant of our television screens, the great Don Mlangeni-Nawa. He was a legend in the industry.
His story is one of perseverance, passion and purpose. He didn’t just act, he inspired. He didn’t just perform, he transformed.
South Africa has lost more than an actor. We’ve lost a piece of our cultural soul.
Rest in peace, Don Mlangeni-Nawa. You’ve played your part, and you played it to perfection,” said McKenzie.
