U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iranians to continue anti-government protests and declared “HELP IS ON ITS WAY” in a post on Truth Social, as international condemnation mounts over a brutal crackdown that rights groups say has killed thousands.
“Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price,” Trump wrote. “I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!”
The statement came amid reports of mass demonstrations since late December 2025, marking one of the most severe challenges to Iran’s clerical leadership since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Authorities claim they have regained control after nights of unrest, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei hailing pro-government rallies as proof the movement is defeated.
Rights organizations report a staggering death toll from security forces’ use of live ammunition. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) confirmed at least 1,850 protesters killed (plus 135 government-affiliated and nine civilians) over more than two weeks, with over 16,700 arrests. Other estimates suggest the true figure could reach thousands or even higher, exacerbated by a near-total internet blackout lasting days (now partially lifted for outgoing calls). Videos verified by outlets like AFP showed bodies in morgues near Tehran, with families searching desperately.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) and others warn of potential executions, including death sentences under “moharebeh” (waging war against God) charges. Amnesty International expressed fears of swift, arbitrary trials to deter dissent.
European leaders voiced outrage: France, Germany, and the UK summoned Iranian ambassadors. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen called rising casualties “horrifying” and promised further sanctions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking in India, declared: “When a regime can only hold on to power through violence, then it is effectively finished. I believe that we are now witnessing the last days and weeks of this regime.”
Analysts caution against predicting imminent collapse, citing the resilience of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other repressive tools, despite the protests’ scale and explicit anti-regime demands.
Trump’s vague promise of “help” — amid prior threats of military action — raised speculation but lacked specifics. His administration has also imposed new economic pressures, including 25% tariffs on countries doing business with Iran, contributing to rising oil prices.
Iranian officials have blamed “terrorists” for casualties and reported dozens of security force deaths, holding large funerals and declaring national mourning.
The unrest follows recent regional tensions, including a June 2025 war with Israel that killed top officials and forced Khamenei into temporary hiding.
